Diagnostic methods in hematology

Hematology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with the examination and treatment of blood diseases or changes in the blood caused by other diseases. Changes in hematopoiesis (blood cell formation processes) that cause other diseases are much more common than primary blood diseases.

Changes in the numerical values of some of the blood cells, lack or increase in their number, are often associated with or caused by many endocrinological, gastroenterological, nephrological, immunological and other diseases.

If the patient is visiting a hematologist for the first time, it is necessary to bring a colored preparation of peripheral blood (plate). This preparation will be analyzed by a hematologist using a light microscope.

Diagnostics in hematology

In most cases, this is the end of hematological diagnostics. However, in certain cases it is necessary to carry out further hematological diagnostics in a timely manner. In those situations, it is necessary to carry out invasive hematological diagnostics, that is, to take bone marrow samples from one of the two hematopoietically active bones in an adult – from the sternum or from the pelvic bones.

The material obtained by puncture and aspiration, after specific staining and after microscopic examination, provides crucial data on the appearance and properties of blood cells. A bone marrow biopsy, which is performed exclusively from the pelvic bone, provides the best data on the very structure (architecture) of the bone marrow and enables the implementation of additional staining (immunohistochemical examination). These diagnostic methods are painful and different patients experience them differently.

At Radović Polyclinic, there is the possibility of performing these methods under short-term general anesthesia. After completing the procedures, patients can return to their daily activities in a short time. In the modern diagnosis of hematological diseases, additional immunological, immunohistochemical, cytogenetic and molecular diagnostic methods are increasingly important. Polyclinic Radović is connected to all major laboratories that carry out these specific analyses, and there is the possibility of taking samples and sending materials to these laboratories.
