Celebrating 130 years of Zrenjanin hospital – people who built modern medicine
The General Hospital in Zrenjanin is celebrating its 130th anniversary, which is an opportunity not only to celebrate but also to remember the doctors who, with their knowledge, energy and vision, left a lasting mark on the development of health care in this city. Among them, Dr. Miroslav Radović, a cardiologist whose professional contribution significantly improved the treatment of cardiology patients in Zrenjanin and beyond, has a special place.
Dr. Miroslav Radović – head of the Coronary Unit (2006–2014)
In the period from 2006 to 2014, Dr. Miroslav Radović was the head of the Coronary Unit of the Zrenjanin General Hospital. During that mandate, together with his team, he implemented a series of organizational and medical innovations that raised the level of treatment of coronary patients to an unprecedented level.
Special focus is placed on modern diagnostics and continuous monitoring of patients. In the Coronary Unit, the permanent presence of an ultrasound machine is ensured, a mobile X-ray machine has been introduced, as well as modern central monitoring of vital functions. For the first time, invasive catheterization of the right heart using the Seldinger method is systematically applied, as well as analysis of gas and acid-base parameters by puncture of the radial artery.
During his tenure, non-invasive lung ventilation (CPAP mask) was introduced, while respiratory support was further improved by the acquisition of two new modern lung ventilators. In parallel with technical improvements, continuous education of doctors and on-call staff was carried out, including training for the implantation of a temporary pacemaker.
In that period, the Zrenjanin Hospital was among the first centers in Serbia that applied the most modern therapy for acute coronary syndromes , including fibrinolytic agents, low molecular weight heparins, modern infusion solutions and other therapeutic protocols. All these changes led to the fact that the quality of treatment in the Coronary Unit practically doubled .
Wider contribution to the development of cardiology in Vojvodina
Dr. Radović was also one of the founders of the Vojvodina Active for Emergency Cardiology, as well as the Active for Arterial Hypertension, whose work significantly improved communication between secondary and tertiary health institutions. This directly shortened the time to adequate treatment of patients with acute cardiovascular syndromes — which was also the topic of his subspecialist work, realized in cooperation with prof. Dr. Gordan Panić and Katica Pavlović.
In cooperation with prof. Dr. Goran Milašinović and prof. Dr. Vasilij Topalov, participated in the founding of the pacemaker center, which was later headed by Dr. Zoltan Lazar. Also, together with Dr. Živo Kozlovački, as a member of the first generation, he successfully completed the first recognized school of echocardiography in 2002, thus laying the foundations of modern echocardiographic diagnostics in Zrenjanin.
Legacy of knowledge and personal integrity
It is especially important to point out that Dr. Miroslav Radović selflessly passed on knowledge to younger colleagues during his entire career, building staff who years later led the cardiology service of the hospital. He retired from all positions and positions for reasons of principle, due to disagreement with the management policy at the time and the denial of the possibility of establishing a catheterization laboratory — which, paradoxically, was realized only a decade later.
Today, Dr. Radović continues to work independently, dedicated to patients from Zrenjanin, Serbia and the diaspora, remaining an example of professional consistency, expertise and responsibility towards the medical profession.
